Natural Sponges

Sponges are among the most abundant and widely distributed marine animals.  They are invertebrates, which are animals without a backbone.   A sponge can either be a single animal or a colony of animals.  They are incapable of locomotion and they attach themselves to rocks.   The living "tissue" is a soft, dark, slimy material that covers a soft, flexible skeleton.  The latter is what we generally call a "sponge."  It is what is left after the softer tissue has been cleaned off.   Human have been using natural sponges for thousands of years for general cleaning; padding helmets, armor and clothes; and, of course for bathing.  Many regard them as superior to the artificial sponges used so widely today.
CAUTION:  Do Not use bleach with natural sponges, as it will destroy the cells.
