Clam Shells and Spiny Oyster Shells

Bivalve is the common name for any mollusk characterized by a shell divided into two valves hinged at one side. They are of the class Bivalvia, also called Pelecypoda. There are more than 6,000 known species; they include the clam, cockle, mussel, oyster, and scallop or pecten. Most live in salt water, but many species survive in fresh water. Clams and Spiny Oysters are among the showiest. They are perfect accessories to adorn your coffee table or curio cabinet. All are specimens are complete, consisting of both halves of the shell. They are also becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as over-collecting has led many countries to temporarily ban commercial export.
