| Bivalve is the common name for any mollusk characterized by a shell divided into
two valves hinged at one side. They are of the class Bivalvia, also called Pelecypoda.
There are more than 6,000 known species; they include the clam, cockle, mussel, oyster,
and scallop or pecten. Most live in salt water, but many species survive in fresh water.
Pectens, often called scallops and fan shells, are members of the Pectinidae Family. The
shells are fan shaped to almost round and present a relatively flat profile. Those from
tropical regions can be very colorful. |
